A firepit is an increasingly popular addition to many gardens across the UK. Not only do they provide a source of heat, but they also act as an ideal item to socialise around with friends or family.

As an incredibly versatile feature, you can incorporate a firepit into any outdoor style or garden size. There are many different varieties of firepits, and they are a fantastic excuse to increase your time outdoors for a longer portion of the year.

Where is the best place to put a firepit?

There are a few important safety considerations when choosing where to place your firepit:

  1. Find a level surface
  2. Ensure that you can position it in a wide-open area
  3. You should remove any materials nearby that could catch fire (i.e., woodpiles)

You can place firepits on grass, but for safety reasons, it is preferred that you situate them on level gravel or on a patio.

Hillier top tip: avoid placing them on a wooden deck. Both the heat from your firepit and any embers can cause damage to your decking.

How far away should a firepit be from your house?

You should place it at least 20 feet away from any structure, including houses or sheds, to avoid any concerns about ignition.

Be sure to position your firepit away from any hedges or low-hanging trees. This will eliminate the concern of these also catching fire.

What looks good around a firepit?

Seating: Having a welcoming seating area that surrounds your firepit can create a really inviting and comfortable space that just longs to be used. Including an outdoor seating area means you can play around with multiple shapes, colours and textures through pillows, blankets and fabrics. Having the ability to change the look of your seating area means that your designated area will always look fresh and trendy. Find your new furniture set from Hillier here.

Lights: Accentuate the warmth and cosiness of a firepit by adding lights around the feature piece. Use string lights to produce a segmented section for your area. You can also position standalone lights around the boundary of the zone. Lights can also create a safe, lit walkway to and from your firepit for those late nights that you spend around your new central point. Paving: Draw the eye towards your firepit by laying paving that leads directly to it. Use shaped slabs to spotlight it and create a defined space where it is positioned. By arranging paving around your firepit, you are able to make a statement and a distinct feature.
