Growing Guide

Planting

Plant in the spring months (April-May are best) and ensure that you do not plant in the shade as your agapanthus won’t flower as well. If your soil frequently waterlogs or if you live in a colder climate plant your agapanthus in a container for best results.

Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the top of the hole. Fill around with more compost/soil mixture and firm in. The root ball must be thoroughly covered and firmed in well to ensure there are no air pockets around the root ball that may cause it to dry out.

Watering

Water the plant and surrounding area including the root ball thoroughly. You may want to also add a layer of mulch such as bark to help prevent water evaporation and stop weeds growing. Continue to water regularly while your plant establishes but ease back towards the end of September to allow the foliage to toughen up.

Pruning

Dead head your Agapanthus at the base of the flower once these have faded. The plant will then have the opportunity to flower for longer. You can always leave the seedheads to allow interest during the winter months. Leaves can be removed at any time if they begin to look worn.

Complementary Planting Ideas

Most Agapanthus will grow well in groups along with fellow tall perennials, drifts of ornamental grasses (including wild flowers) or sun loving flowering bulbs. It is worth keeping in mind that Agapanthus do grow a lot of leaves and that these like many other perennials can take up to 2 years for them to flower. Knowing this we suggest that you plant something that flowers sooner to bring immediate colour to your garden.

One of the most popular companion plants for this can be the lavender, for it’s similar nature to the Agapanthus as it shares the same growing requirements. The vibrant purple flowers along with the blossoms of the Agapanthus can create a lovely calming colour combination.

A union that can create a diverse range of colours and shapes is the daylily (Hemerocallis), these will bloom at the same time as the Agapanthus adding texture and visual appeal to any garden.

Fact

These Agapanthus ‘Neverland’ make excellent cut flowers, because of the green strong vertical stems. The flowers are a beautiful contrast in any vase indoors and the buds will open showing their perpendicular stature.
