Orchids

The exceptional beauty and variety of orchids make them a hugely popular houseplant and an excellent Mother’s Day gift. Orchids may be delicate in appearance, but they are hardy indoor plants. There are also plenty of species to choose from, so we have every personality covered.

Why Orchids Make the Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Choosing the perfect gift for Mother’s Day can be a challenge, but one timeless and elegant option which stands out is an orchid! These flowers symbolise beauty, thoughtfulness, and love, making them the ideal gift for celebrating the important women in your life.

  • Long-lasting Beauty: Unlike traditional cut flowers which fade quickly, orchids can last for weeks or even months with proper care. Their beauty serves as a lasting reminder of your appreciation and love.
  • Symbolism: Different orchid varieties carry different meanings, but overall, they represent grace, admiration, and beauty; qualities that perfectly describe mothers.
  • Low Maintenance: Orchids are relatively easy to maintain. They require minimal watering and thrive in indirect sunlight, making them an excellent choice for mums who love flowers but may not have time for extensive plant care.

How to Choose the Right Orchid for Your Mother

  • Phalaenopsis Orchids: Known as the “moth orchid,” this variety is one of the most popular due to its long bloom period and easy care.
  • Dendrobium Orchids: With their delicate, vibrant blooms, these orchids add a tropical touch to any space.
  • Cymbidium Orchids: These striking orchids have multiple flowers on each stem and symbolise strength and nobility.
  • Oncidium Orchids: Often called “dancing lady” orchids, they bring a playful and cheerful vibe.

How to Choose a Healthy Plant

No matter the type of orchid or its intended placement, selecting a healthy plant is crucial. Here are key factors to consider:

  • Roots: Healthy orchid roots should be green in colour.
  • Leaves: Ideally, leaves should be a healthy green. A few yellow leaves are normal, but if most leaves are yellow, the orchid may be dehydrated. Look out for small holes, which can indicate pest issues, and avoid plants with soft, mushy, or rotten areas.
  • Blooms: Choose an orchid with some closed buds rather than one that has already finished flowering. This ensures you will enjoy blooming flowers for longer.

Caring for Orchids to Keep Them Thriving

  • Light: Place them in bright, indirect sunlight.
  • Watering: Orchids do not require much water, which is where a lot of people can go wrong. Avoid letting your orchid sit in water; too much water can cause soggy roots and root rot.
  • Feeding: Feed orchid plants regularly with a balanced orchid fertiliser. They ideally need feeding every two weeks in spring and summer, and every four weeks in autumn and winter.
  • Repotting: Repotting is required when the compost has broken down and no longer drains well; it’s recommended to repot every two years. Also, consider repotting when roots are overgrown and spilling out of the pot or there are signs of root rot and fungal infections. Try to hold off repotting until the orchid has finished blooming.

To re-pot, you’ll need another clear pot which is about an inch bigger than the original one and some peat-free orchid potting mix. The potting mix should allow for proper drainage and airflow to the roots.

This Mother’s Day, go beyond the traditional bouquet and surprise your mother with a stunning orchid plant. Their elegance, lasting beauty, and meaningful symbolism make them the ideal gift to express your gratitude and love. Whether she’s a seasoned plant lover or a beginner, an orchid will brighten her space and remind her of your appreciation for years to come.

Rosa Mum in a Million

With an abundance of beautifully scented, large, medium-pink flowers and dark green glossy leaves, this is the ideal gift rose for Mother’s Day. It is suitable for a mixed border or container planting. A rose, for a mum in a million.

Rosa ‘Mum in a Million’ is a hybrid tea rose renowned for its abundant, large, medium-pink flowers and dark green, glossy foliage. Its robust fragrance and elegant blooms make it an ideal gift, symbolizing deep appreciation and love.

Key Features:

  • Bloom Size and Colour: This variety produces large, medium-pink flowers that are both visually stunning and richly scented.
  • Foliage: The dark green, glossy leaves provide a striking contrast to the vibrant blooms, enhancing the plant’s overall appeal.
  • Growth Habit: ‘Mum in a Million’ is suitable for mixed borders or container planting, reaching an approximate height of 100cm and a spread of 80cm.

Planting and Care Tips:

  • Soil Preparation: Plant in well-drained, fertile soil. Incorporate well-rotted manure or garden compost to enrich the soil, and consider adding bone meal to promote strong root development.
  • Planting Depth: Ensure the graft union (the point where the cultivated rose is grafted onto the rootstock) is buried beneath the soil surface, approximately 5-10cm deep.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced rose fertilizer in spring to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
  • Pruning: Prune by one-third in February or March to maintain shape and promote healthy growth. Regularly deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering.
