Establishing a new lawn from seed

Follow these simple steps to growing your lawn from grass seed:

  • Clear the area where you wish to put your grass seed. Be certain that you have removed any weeds or stones that may be there.
  • Aerate your soil and break down any areas that may be too compact. By doing this now, you are setting your lawn up for a good drainage system and circulation of nutrients.
  • Level the area that you’re working with. Make sure that when you stand on the surface you do not leave any shoe prints.
  • Allow the soil to rest for around 10 days before sowing any seeds. It also gives you an opportunity to clear any other weeds that appear.
  • Rake the area you wish to sow your seeds on.
  • Select your grass seeds and sow across the ground evenly. Be careful to read any instructions that may be present on the packaging of your grass seeds.
  • Tread your grass seeds into the earth for an improved germination rate. This will encourage your seeds to root into the soil.
  • Water generously for the first few weeks after sowing depending on the rainfall. If you have an increase in heavy rain then do not water as much.
  • Allow your grass to grow around 4 inches (10cm) before you begin to cut the grass.

Keep your new lawn looking brilliant with these top tips from Hillier:

  • Avoid walking on your new lawn until it has fully established itself in the soil. This can take up to three weeks. Any movement on your new lawn before then may cause unnecessary harm, and the last thing you want across your new investment are footprints!
  • Water liberally. New lawns need a lot of water after they’ve been sown and will require extra, even if there has been heavy rain. For the first few weeks, you should water it each day and focus on any sections that may not receive as much rainfall.
  • Do not mow your new lawn for at least the first month. You need to be sure that the blades are at least 4 inches tall and that the roots of your new lawn have established themselves in the ground. Little and often is better than all at once, so only remove a small length to begin with and repeat this to create a thicker lawn.
  • Apply a high-performing fertiliser to help your grass grow thick and lush. Evenly spread it across your lawn and repeat this every couple of months for a necessary layer of nutrients. Lawn Boost Organic Lawn Fertiliser is a long-lasting and organic option that helps protect grass from disease and drought, stimulating healthy growth.
