Tilia platyphyllos ‘Princes Street’

"Broad-leaved lime"

Tilia Platyphyllos ‘princes Street’

Common Name

"Broad-leaved lime"

Canopy

Large, vigorous, broadly conical selection.

Foliage

Broad, roundish-ovate, sharply toothed. Good leaf holding qualities in Autumn.

Flowers

Fragrant in late June to early July – Bee friendly.

Size

12m high x 5m wide after 25 years. Ultimately a large tree.

This selection is more upright than the species, narrower in form but just as vigorous. Another interesting characteristic is it holds onto its leaves longer than most in the autumn.

The species is a large, fairly fast growing lime tree – known as the “Broad-leaved Lime”. It forms a majestic parkland tree with roundish, ovate, sharply toothed leaves. Suckers are produced but not as prolifically as Tilia x europaea, but as such is better suited to the wider landscape than street planting.

It lends itself to being a large avenue tree or stately specimen tree. It flowers in late June to early July and is attractive to bees and other pollinators and is prone to aphids and associated honeydew.
