Sorbus aucuparia, commonly known as the Mountain Ash or Rowan, is a deciduous tree celebrated for its ornamental beauty, hardiness and cultural significance. It is native to the UK and fast-growing at first.

Although the tree typically forms a symmetrical, upright crown, it tends to be variable in habit, ideal for informal/ naturalised planting. For more formal situations, specify: Sorbus aucuparia Streetwise, Sorbus aucuparia Cardinal Royal, or Sorbus aucuparia Sheerwater Seedling.

Leaves are imparipinnate and a medium green colour. These transition to a strong yellow-orange and brick red come autumn, before falling in winter. In late spring to early summer, Sorbus aucuparia produces clusters of white flowers arranged in corymbs. These attract pollinators and add a charming touch of the tree’s overall aesthetic. Following the flowering period, the tree develops large clusters of bright red fruits.
