Tilia platyphyllos, commonly referred to as a large-leaved lime, boasts heart-shaped leaves that are conspicuously toothed, with slight hair on the upper surface, and dense hair underneath. These leaves emerge earlier than those of Tilia cordata, and are also larger in size. It is thought to be native in certain parts of England.

As a deciduous tree, the large-leaved lime undergoes a wonderful transformation throughout the year. In spring and early summer, the tree produces fragrant, pendulous, yellow flowers that are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators. These give way to small, round fruits that mature in late summer.

One of the notable characteristics of the Tilia platyphyllos its its crown, which provides shade and overall aesthetic charm. It’s well balanced, rounded canopy, along with its broadly columnar shape makes it a popular choice for avenues, parks and large garden landscapes. The large-leaved lime is also adaptable to a variety of soil types, thriving in well-drained and fertile conditions. It’s tolerance to pollution makes it a popular choice for urban environments.

Whether used as a specimen tree or planted in rows to create avenues, Tilia platyphyllos adds natural beauty to diverse landscapes. Its combination of ornamental appeal, fragrant flowers and adaptability makes it a valued addition to parks, avenues and other urban green spaces.
