One of our two native oaks and indisputably the most abundant. The sheer presence of these enduring giants in our countryside evokes a sense of awe. Despite its relatively slow growth, time is a faithful ally given the oaks ability to last for centuries. In open settings it develops a sprawling, broad canopy adorned with robust branches.

The leaves have minimal leaf stalk and exhibit distinct lobes and boast a rich green hue. They transition into subtle shades of oranges and browns during autumn. Producing both male and female flowers, the delicate male catkins appear alongside leaves in spring, heralding the subsequent arrival of acorns. These fruits borne on stalks, sometimes feature more than one acorn per stalk.

As a sizeable, expansive and long-lived tree, each oak plays a pivotal role by supporting a diverse array of life. Beyond its ecological contributions, such as its cooling effect, ability to regulate water events, carbon absorption, and oxygen generation, the significance of these trees cannot be overstated. Although a recent imported pest, Oak Processionary Moth, poses a threat, the benefits of continued oak populations can not be over-stated. It is imperative that they find broader planting to ensure their vital role in sustaining life and environmental balance is duly acknowledged.
