Acer x freemanii is a cultivar from a naturally forming hybrid between Acer rubrum (red maple) and Acer saccharinum (silver maple). This unique tree was discovered and cultivated by Glenn Jeffers back in 1960s America, giving rise to the alternative common name; ‘Jeffers Red’.
This hybrid takes the best qualities from each of its parents. It is tough and very resilient like the silver maple, with the grace, beauty and vibrant colour from the red maple. It is particularly suited to the British climate, providing fantastic ornamental value when designed with space to flourish. As the autumn nights draw in, the tree’s emerald leaves ignite into a blaze of scorched orange and crimson reds, becoming a real centerpiece to any location.
Unlike other species such as Liquidambar and cultivars like Acer campestre ‘William Caldwell’, this tree will show its autumn beauty regardless of its location.
Size | 10m high x 6m wide after 25 years |
Environment | A resilient tree that does not require the higher acidic pH levels to enhance its glorious colour. It succeeds on the majority of free-draining soils. Because it is a vigorous grower it can be brittle at stages and shed limbs in highly exposed locations. |
Foliage | Emerald-green leaves with a silver underside that shimmer in the summer breeze. As the name suggests, this tree becomes ablaze with early autumn colours of gold, ruby and plum. |
Bark | Smooth, nickel-grey bark that contrasts wonderfully with the intense fiery colours of its autumn canopy. |
Forms | Single stem, Multi-stem |
