The Brief

Designer Claudia de Yong was in the process of creating a show garden titled ‘Romance in the Ruins’ for Wyevale, set to be showcased at BBC Gardeners World Live 2017. Drawing inspiration from the medieval Beeston Castle in Cheshire, the design showcased ivy-covered crumbling turrets, water cascading into a pond, roses climbing pergolas, wildflower turf, and various elements to evoke a whimsical atmosphere of ancient disrepair.

Facing a time constraint, Claudia reached out to us for assistance in providing a selection of tree varieties for the garden.

Delivery & Horticultural Skills

The timing of the deliveries was crucial in this project to accommodate the show garden build programme. Our own experience of building show gardens, through almost a century of exhibiting at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, was a great help when discussing the practical challenges of the project.

Project Summary

We provided 5x semi-mature trees specifically chosen for their ability to enhance the desired ambiance of the show garden, whether through the gracefully peeling bark of a slightly ‘wild’ appearance. Additionally, we supplied 45 sets of instant hedging and various climbing plants, including Ivy, Wisteria, and Roses, sourced from our nurseries. These climbing plants were strategically used to envelop and enhance different aspects of the garden.

Claudia’s Visit

Claudia, along with her sponsor, visited our nurseries to tag the trees, and we maintained close communication in the brief period leading up to the show. Our plant nurseries also cultivated a diverse array of shrubs and herbaceous plants according to the client’s specifications.

Collaborating with Claudia and her team on this time-sensitive project was a delight, and we were thrilled to learn that the garden received a gold medal and ‘Best in Show’. Positive feedback highlighted that the garden achieved the desired effect of appearing timeless, as if it had been there for generations. This outcome was was particularly gratifying for us.

Our Value

  • Ability to supply the desired tree varieties, along with additional plants from our nurseries.
  • Supplying at short notice to an exacting build programme.
