Tilia cordata ‘Greenspire’ is an American selection, introduced to the market in 1961 by Princeton Nurseries, USA. It boasts leaves that are slightly larger than those of the species. These are heart shaped, and have bluish-green undersides. It’s branches grow in a uniform and ascending manner, making it an excellent choice for creating avenues.
In early summer, the tree produces flowers in short umbels, which are great for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Small fruit follows late summer and are grey and furry. Like the species, it is resistant to aphids and the associated honeydew.
Tilia cordata ‘Greenspire’ received the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit in 2020, affirming its horticultural excellence.
