"Wellingtonia / Big Tree"
A magnificently fast-growing ultimately very large tree, useful as a long-term focal point in the landscape. Specimens of 30m high are not uncommon in the UK and some have reached over 50m. Very stable in the ground; few, if any, having been blown down in the great gales of 1987 and 1990. Best planted small and container grown. Lime tolerant only not for shallow chalk. It is a native of California where it will reach over 80m in height. The oldest trees are said to be 3,000 years old.
