Pterocarya fraxinifolia, commonly known as Caucasian Wingnut, is a is a fast growing deciduous tree that commands attention with its impressive stature and large leaves. Originating from the Juglandaceae family, this tree is favoured for its rapid growth and expansive, spreading canopy.

The Caucasian Wingnuts foliage is a standout feature, boasting large and glossy pinnate leaves that lend a vibrant appearance to the tree. In mid-summer, the tree produces elongated catkin flowers, some reaching up to 50cm in length. Following the catkins, the tree will yield distinctive winged fruits, adding further interest to the trees overall aesthetic.

This tree has remarkable adaptability to various soil types. It will thrive in a wide range of environmental conditions, including both very wet and very dry soils. Unlike some fast growing trees, such as the Ailanthus altissima, Pterocarya fraxinifolia is notably less brittle and possesses a higher level of adaptability. However, it’s essential to note that this species is not tolerant of salty sea winds.

Especially attractive when presented as a multi-stem, the Caucasian Wingnut contributes an aesthetic appeal to the landscape.
