Prunus sargentii ‘Rancho’

This American cultivar closely resembles the species and was clones in the 1950’s, specifically chosen for its distinctive narrow columnar growth pattern. As it matures, it gently broadens into a narrow vase shape, spanning approximately 3m in width. Often referred to as ‘Sargent’s Upright Cherry’, its unique form has made it a popular choice in urban environments worldwide. It is particularly well-suited for central reservations and street tree planting.

In spring, the single flowers bloom in clusters of pairs and fours, showcasing magnificent shades of creamy pinks in their large petals. The anthers dangle from a purple-pink centre, providing a striking contrast to the silky nature of the petals. Notably, these flowers have an extended lifespan, lasting for over three weeks and displaying their vibrant colours.

The leaves unfurl in a coppery red hue, transitioning to fresh emerald green shades during the summer months. Remarkably, they are among the first to reveal their autumnal display, as early as September and persisting through November. The fiery shades of orange they adopt during this period, are nothing short of stunning and spectacular.
