Medium. Resembling the hornbeam (Carpinus) and notable in autumn when arrayed with their hop-like fruits. A round-headed tree which gives clear yellow autumn colour. Fruits 3.5-5cm long, each nutlet contained in a flat, bladder-like husk. Enchanting in spring when the many branches are strung with numerous, long, drooping male catkins.
