The Betula pendula ‘Obelisk’ originates from Northern France in the 1950s. It possesses the iconic silver birch foliage and gleaming white bark. The growth pattern is notably upright, spanning just 2-2.5m in width, making it ideal for smaller spaces.

With its columnar appearance and upright branches, this tree paints a graceful silhouette, especially in winter. Its canopy is open and it stands at a height of around 12m after 50 years. The bark is whiter compared to the Betula pendula ‘Fastigiata’, and as it matures it takes on a grey tint. Highlighted by red branches, its leaves are rhomboid. They turn a brilliant yellow in autumn, creating a delightful contrast with its mature brown branches and sturdy trunk. This tree tends to hold onto its leaves for a longer period.

Whilst it prefers well-drained soils, its less tolerant of compacted soil and sensitive to fluctuating water levels. Given its shallow root system, it’s not the best choice for areas exposed to coastal winds.
