Why Hillier Nurseries

Hillier History

Hillier was founded in 1864 by Edwin Hillier and remains a family run nursery with the fifth generation now actively involved in the business. Hillier employs 500 people across its wholesale nursery, trees and garden centre divisions and is based in Ampfield in Hampshire. Hillier has been involved in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show from the early days and is the most successful exhibitor in the show’s history with a record 72 consecutive RHS Chelsea Gold Medals.

Our Plants

Although Garden Centres continue to grow and diversify, plants are still at the heart of our business. Hillier Nurseries are known as growers of an unbeatably wide range of trees and shrubs. This reputation was established by the late Sir Harold Hillier whose private collection of plants became the world renowned Hillier Arboretum, also known as the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens.

Today Hillier’s Wholesale Nursery division grows shrubs and perennials for quality garden retailers nationwide. The palette of plants available to gardeners has never been greater and new introductions continuously widen the choice.

We try to achieve a balance between ‘new’ plants and tried and tested favourites. This is reflected in our extensive range of large pot perennials, for example which we believe puts the Hillier perennial range into a league of its own.

Over the years, Hillier has been responsible for numerous plant introductions, many of which have become essentials in British gardens and the nursery continues with the tradition of innovation and introduction of excellent, new garden plants to the present day.

We have a dedicated team focused on looking for new and different garden centre plants to meet the demands of a changing market place.

We test potential new plant introductions with focus groups. Now, we are also giving you the opportunity to drive future trends in our R&D section, where you can vote on the plants you think will be loved by customers.

Hillier has always been a pioneer within horticulture, pursuing policies that have proved both commercially and environmentally beneficial.
