Quality Plants and Informative Talks Top of the Menu at Hillier Nurseries Annual Open Day 2019

Plant ‘recipe’: Lavandula stoechas Collection

On Wednesday 13th February 2019, Hillier Nurseries hosted a number of trade guests, including garden centre buyers from across the UK for its annual Open Day.

With the glorious late winter sunshine casting warmth and light across the venue – one of the company’s impressive glasshouses near Romsey, Hampshire – there was a clear appetite for British grown plants and many positive discussions about our exciting industry.

During a day that borrowed inspiration from the Great British Bake Off, attendees got the taste for the huge range of plants available from Hillier Nurseries. There was fantastic feedback on the very high quality of plants – not only on show, but those that customers are currently receiving from Hillier Nurseries with each delivery.

Open Day guests enjoyed the opportunity to get a closer look at new products, including varieties coming in 2020, existing stock ranges and bestsellers. A number of exciting and imaginative ‘recipes’ for plant collections were presented – such as Low Maintenance plants, plants suitable for a Wildlife Garden and British Grown Shrubs. There was also the opportunity to see the wonderful range of Hillier Lavenders that will be arriving in stores very soon.

Guests enjoyed inspiring talks on a range of valuable industry topics, including biosecurity, sourcing new plants and tips for successful marketing. A first look was given into progress towards RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019 – with some guests cleverly spotting the ‘Chelsea corner’ of plants in progress! The HTA also presented on the important work the body is doing on behalf of the industry.

A day inspired by Bake Off naturally meant plenty of cake was available all day, along with catering from the Hillier restaurant team. There was a positive response to the theme of the day – not to mention the cake!

Sarah Mills, Head of Wholesale at Hillier, commented: “Our Open Day this year was a perfect opportunity to share our passion and knowledge for plants. The event was fully booked and, together with the beautiful weather, there was a really positive buzz throughout. We were very pleased to receive such great feedback from those who came on the Open Day itself and around the quality of our plants and service.”
