Hillier Nurseries has a family tradition spanning more than 150 years. We are proud to say that, today, we are recognised as the UK’s premier producer of trees for the trade professional. We supply trees all year round from either our field or container nurseries, which cover an area of 750 acres across the beautiful Hampshire countryside.
Growth Through the Generations
Mighty oaks come from small acorns, and this is the story with Hillier. The foundations of the company were laid when Edwin Hillier purchased a two-acre nursery with companion florist shop in Winchester in 1864. The business has expanded over the generations from this starting point. Between the World Wars, more nursery land was acquired, allowing production of larger trees for Local Authorities.
The entrepreneurial spirit of Edwin’s grandson, Sir Harold Hillier, helped establish Hillier as the world’s leading company in terms of plant material for gardeners. He also compiled the plantsman’s bible, The Hillier Manual of Trees and Shrubs, which has sold more than 200,000 copies worldwide.
From the 1970s, when fourth-generation Hillier’s John and Robert began to oversee the business, Hillier began to supply Local Authorities and Landscape Contractors on a much larger scale, bringing Hillier Trees into the leading position it enjoys today.
